SFC. Charles Meadows

I lost my son Major Greg Black U.S. Army in march 2022

“Stay focused. Remember your training. You’ll be fine.” .

Anne Black looks at a photo of her son, who died by suicide. He suffered from a traumatic brain injury and severe PTSD.

Captain Jamie Brunette

There are moments when time seems to stand still, when the entire world slows down, you become acutely aware that you will remember every detail for the rest your life. Indeed, those moments remain with you.

At 19, I was not in college or figuring out life like most people. I was in Saudi Arabia, at war. I was terrified, unprepared, and anxious. We endured the chaos.

  • Inhaling toxins from burning oil fields.

  • Incinerating trash and even human waste.

  • Standing guard in blistering heat by day and freezing cold by night.

  • Gas attack drills that rendered you completely helpless against invisible, deadly enemy.

The devastation was everywhere: burned-out tanks and abandoned cars. Hungry women and children in a desolate, war-torn land. Every single day, I wondered, Will I make it home? But I had a job to do—and people depending on me. SFC Meadows returned to the States before the rest of us. He was there to prepare the barracks for our return. When I got back, he gave me a huge hug and said, “Well done." I didn’t know that would be the last time I’d ever see him or hear his voice. SFC Meadows took his own life.

Do you recall your activities and experiences at the age of 19?

Jamie did not show any signs of being outwardly unhappy and remained professional at all times. Air Force Captain Jamie Brunette took her life on February 9, 2015. Jamie spent eleven years in the Air Force and had been deployed to Afghanistan immediately before her separation from the military. She had been seeking help from the VA for PTSD. Captain Brunette left no suicide note and spoke to no one. Her sister, Jackie Leverich, who served 18 years in the Coast Guard, said she was well aware of the signs of PTSD. The 30-year-old killed herself with her Smith & Wesson .380 handgun.

My son took his own life. He told me he was cleaning his apartment and had taken his dog Cutty over to the sitter. I knew in my head, “No, this is not good. He would not part with Cutty for no reason.” So I told him, “Oh, you are cleaning, I’m coming up!” and he said, “No, Mom — next week, next week.” So I asked what food I could bring him and he told me I didn’t have to bring anything, but I told him, “You know I’m going to bring you stuff so just tell me what you want.” He told me anything I brought would be fine. We got off the phone, and I thought to myself, “That was way too clear and concise of a conversation.” Two minutes later, I got a text from him: "Thanks for always being there for me."

I texted back, “Always and forever.” Then he sent a picture of Cutty that the sitter had sent. I was with his grandpa, and I told him his grandpa said hi, and he sent a little wave emoji back. That was at 4:30 p.m. or so, and that was the end. He died at 10 o’clock that night.

Emma Dash said that after her husband, Sgt. Brieux Dash returned home with PTSD(post-traumatic stress syndrome.) Dash, who grew up in upstate New York, lived in Palm Springs with his wife of 13 years and three children. He'd been in the Army from about 2005 to about 2015. He'd gone twice to Iraq, each time for about 18 months. For weeks, his family said, he had trouble sleeping and acted erratically. Several times, relatives said, he had admitted to suicidal thoughts.

Sgt. Brieux Dash

Goodbye, Veteran. Rest in peace. You are loved, missed and most of all you are remembered...

"She seemed upbeat," says her sister Jackie Leverich, "but she wasn't really giving us a whole lot of detail about her life and what was going on."

Emma Dash placed her husband in the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center's psychiatric ward. Three days after he was admitted, Brieux hanged himself in his room at the VA.
